About ME
My name is Aaron Panagos. I am 28. I was born and raised in the midwest, but now live in Seattle Washington with my lovely wife, Leah. I am an overbooked freelance concept artist and occasional illustrator working primarily in the publishing and gaming industries. I generally get hired to do things like design miniatures and other parts for board games or tabletop games, design monsters/characters/equipment etc. for new or expanding IPs, produce pre-viz storyboards for films, and occasionally do illustrations for CCGs or RPGs. I am currently looking to transition into videogame development – it’s what I’ve always wanted to do, so I’m finally biting the bullet and making the jump.
I earned my BFA in traditional Oil Painting, and I got half-way through a Masters in Illustration before deciding that I’m not really cut out for a career in the ‘fine’ arts. The lessons learned from a huge number of anatomy and figure drawing classes, the endless art history lectures and dozen courses focused on art theory have been extremely valuable in my work – but my personality is geared more toward problem solving than 2d composition.
Though I trained in the 2d arts, I have fallen in love with 3D modelling.
It started as a new skill to enhance my marketability as a concept artist, but I quickly realized that I’d found an artform perfectly suited to my inclinations. Despite the fact that I got distracted by paying gigs in traditional publishing, I’ve always wanted to be involved in video game development (I have binders from my adolescence filled with rudimentary design documents and statistics I generated for my own video games). So I invested a substantial amount of time into developing my skills in 3DS Max, Maya, Zbrush, etc. My basic 3D portfolio is now complete, and I am on the hunt for a new career.

Hello Aaron – just stumbled on your blog here in GA.
I really dig what I’m seeing here, and your tale is inspirational, as I’m working toward a degree in game art and design with hopes of becoming a concept artist or illustrator post 2009.
Great stuff, and thank you for sharing!
